Virginia

“Virginia” is a photo documentary about a hardworking woman from Boone, North Carolina. Virginia is a politician, caterer at Publix, a freelance wedding planner, and above all a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She is a selfless and caring citizen who wants to make a difference in her small, rural community. Virginia highlights the craziness of a local election season, the balance of work and family, and the gender divide in American politics that still persists in our society today.

“Virginia” explores the struggles and sacrifices female politicians make in order to succeed. Women's political participation is a fundamental obligation for gender equality and genuine democracy. Their participation facilitates direct engagement in public decision-making and is a means of ensuring better accountability for women of all ages and races around the United States. Women’s voices must be heard.

This documentary shows that the gender gap in American politics is prevalent at the national and local level. As “Virginia” aims to show how a motivated woman from a rural mountain town can be the starting point for powerful voices that are determined to change the world.
